'I always try to balance the light with the heavy - a few tears of human spirit
in with the sequins and the fringes'.
- Bette Midler
There are two clues as to Type here in this quote by Bette Midler. The first reference is to balancing the light with the heavy. Sevens are a bit like the sun - they bring a lot of light into a room. They lift up the energy and the mood and are generally fun to be around because they themselves are fun-loving and don't like to deny themselves whatever may bring them pleasure. They certainly don't like to dwell on the negative. Note that she says she tries to 'balance the light with the heavy' not 'the heavy with the light'. It is as though, for her, 'the light' is a given and the heaviness has to be added in, not the other way around. The second reference is to 'sequins and fringes'. There can be a decadence with Sevens, an over-the-top-ish frivolity which enjoys the finer things in life and lives to excess. There is something of excess in 'sequins and fringes' as most of us do not wear such clothes though the idea may be very appealing. Where Sevens get into trouble is when they refuse to acknowledge their own painful feelings such as anxiety or sadness and become distracted by, or chase after, everything and anything that seems to promise pleasure or excitement. Unfortunately, as they soon find out, not everything that glitters is gold and they can be left disillusioned, frustrated and cynical and far from feeling satisfied and fulfilled - their greatest desire - they instead become very dissatisfied. In Bette Midler's case she seems to have understood - in her work at least - that it is important to not shirk the tears.
