Understanding Fours

Fours come from a place of feeling different or in some way misunderstood. As a result they are searching for their identity - 'if I am not like everyone else then who am I?' - and they look to their feelings to find it. This is the artistic temperament that is so often written about because it is sensitive and dramatic with a romantic orientation to life. Their passionate views - love and hate are in very close relationship for them - mean that they have a lot of internal 'weather' to navigate and they often use their imaginations to intensify their feelings. When they are less present this means that they can become hypersensitive, temperamental, melancholic and severely depressed. However, healthy Fours are the most self-aware and emotionally honest of all the Types. They are able to dive deep into their feelings and explore what they find there without judging it. They use this introspection and raw honesty as a fuel for creation and their gift is their ability to transform their experiences - especially of pain and suffering - into something unique and redemptive which often touches others at a profound level. In many ways they are alchemists, able to renew themselves through the act of creation. So the Fours amongst us will use their feelings and experiences of being alive at this extraordinary time on earth to express themselves in a unique way that will touch us and, in so doing, help us all to make sense of it. And we each need to look to the Four in us to be creative with this time, to find a means of expressing our subjective experience of it to create something new and valuable from it.
