The Passions

Each Personality (Ego) Type has a way of being distracted, of losing its centre and becoming distorted in its thinking, feeling and doing and we call these different ways the Passions. They are more commonly referred to as Sins but 'sin' ascribes a moral judgement to them when in fact they are really about our nature - the way in which we are each drawn to lose connection if left to our own devices and without a certain level of awareness. Therefore to refer to them as sinful is not helpful. It's more instructive to see them simply as ways in which we go 'off centre' or 'miss the mark', ways in which we become distracted from our tasks in life. The Types with their Passion are as follows:-
One - Anger (more accurately described as Resentment)
Two - Pride (can also be described as Vainglory)
Three - Deceit
Four - Envy
Five - Avarice (more accurately described in the context of the Five as a sort of 'hoarding')
Six - Fear (more accurately described as Anxiety or Angst')
Seven - Gluttony
Eight - Lust
Nine - Sloth
In the following weeks I will look at how each Type manifests it's passion and what we can learn from it.
