The Laws of Nature

The wonderful Caroline Myss, who I think of as a modern mystic, recently spoke in a video about God being Law. In essence she says that everything in the universe has a divine structure which may be apparent to us such as the arrangement of petals of a particular flower, or less obvious but nevertheless a fact, such as the moon goes around the earth. However there are some structures that are less easy to see if we are not educated in how to see. The structure of personality is one such example. Personality is not random, there are natural laws at work and the primary one is that personality, like everything else, has its own structure. This is demonstrated in the Enneagram by the Levels of Development which show that our attitudes and behaviours depend on how well we are doing within ourselves. When we are struggling we behave differently than when we are secure and feeling supported. The major law of the personality, which the Enneagram reveals. is that when we tip into unhealthy levels of functioning we treat others as we most fear to be treated. This law is immutable unless we are present to our own self and therefore conscious of our attitudes and behaviours which is why the Enneagram emphasises the importance of working to be present to ourselves. And we do we that by working to understand ourselves.

In the coming weeks I will be looking at the Primary Fear of each Type and how this manifests itself in their behaviour towards others when they are functioning at an unhealthy level.
