It's interesting to me that we tend to view technology as a departure from human nature - as something entirely separate from us. We put our faith in technology to save us, for example, as though we are incapable of saving ourselves. But technology is not more intelligent than we humans are because it has all been created by us and it is we humans who decide how to use it. We should therefore be looking at human nature, first, and at technology as a product of it - as a product of our curiosity, ingenuity, creativity, knowledge, of our capacity to learn, to invent....

If we want to save ourselves we should look at how we can evolve to make choices that help to redefine our nature rather than our nature always defining our choices. That is really what the work of self-development is all about. The Enneagram is one tool to help us develop ourselves so that we make more thoughtful, more appropriate - in other words better - choices for ourselves and for the world we live in. One thing is for sure, human nature is responsible for the climate crisis we are now in. Our ingenuity, our creativity, our industriousness which brought about the Industrial Revolution and later Capitalism and the consumerism which have defined our age. Our nature dictates the choices we make or don't make and our choices will define what happens from hereon in. So there is no more important work than understanding human nature to help us understand where we are, where we're going, what we need to change and how we, individually, can contribute to that change. We need to bring out the best of us in order to create a better world, in order to create better technology, in order to understand how, and when best, to use it and also, very importantly, to understand its limits. Because although technology may help the human race to save itself, I don't believe it can make up for what we don't possess. I don't believe it can save us if we have not learnt from our own nature, if we have not learnt how we need to change in order to save ourselves. Only we can save ourselves.

How do we do that? By understanding how we operate and why we operate as we do. Only with understanding can we change. And we need to change to understand that when we look after others, we look after the earth. When we look after the earth, we look after others. That what we do for one, we do for the whole, because we are all one.
