What is your wing?

We talk about the Nine Types but each of the Nine Types has two subtypes which relate to the Types on either side of it which can also have an influence on us. In the vast majority of cases one of these Types is more apparent in us than the other and we call this our 'wing'. So a One, for example, will have either a Nine wing or a Two wing depending on whether (in conjunction with their One personality traits) they display attitudes and behaviours more related to a Nine or a Two. A Two will have either a One wing or a Three wing depending on whether they display more One behaviours or Three behaviours, a Three will have either a Two wing or a Four wing and so on. The mix of Type and wing gives a very particular 'flavour' to someone. A Four with a Three wing, for example, is different to a Four with a Five wing in certain subtle but distinguishable ways. (The Types can be imagined as colours with the subtype refining the colour - ie. is the green a blue-ish green or a yellowish green for example?) In the book Personality Types by Don Riso and Russ Hudson they give a name to each of the subtypes which they feel best describes the personality of the mix of Type and wing together and they give very detailed descriptions of each. In my next posts I will write a little about each of the subtypes and how, for example, a Six with a Five wing differs from a Six with a Seven wing.
