The Passion of the One

The Passion of the One is Anger - or perhaps more accurately Resentment. Anger itself is not the problem. It is entirely normal and appropriate to be angry at times and it can be a great motivator in life. The problem comes because Ones feel the need to control their anger. This comes from their desire to be rational, objective, upstanding and correct. Ones, therefore, have difficulty with the messier aspects of human existence and can be intolerant of mistakes and unruly emotions - unpredictable and irrational as they are. However, anger that is repressed does not disappear but bubbles away, hence resentment. Ones are very responsible and sometimes can feel that they are shouldering the responsibility for everything alone, that they are the only ones who care about upholding standards or making sure that something is done in the right way. At certain times this pressure becomes overwhelming and manifests itself as criticism and judgement (of themselves as well as others) and a general dissatisfaction with the world. When they are in this frame of mind nothing is good enough for the One who feels- that things are not being done properly or well enough or how they should be done. Their standards can be punishing to the extent that nothing brings them joy because everything is at fault.

Although we can all sometimes feel that things are not as they should be, Ones need to be careful that this way of thinking does not become a way of being because though they mean well, and Ones do mean well, they are essentially caught in their Passion. It is ironic that, whatever Type we are, we do not get what we want in life via the passion of the Type. It is only, in fact, the cause of more suffering.
