Caroline Myss writes in her new book 'Intimate Conversations with the Divine' that 'One of the most incomprehensible truths in life is that we are strangers to ourselves'. She also writes 'We are never finished getting to know ourselves' It is a strange paradox that this is one of the most satisfying things in life. It seems as though it should be completely the opposite, that it should be unsatisfying but actually no. The mystery is important. The quest to find out who we are and to know something more about ourselves drives us forward. It is compulsive - whether or not we recognise it or even understand that that is what we are doing. For example, when things go wrong we don't want to think that any of it may have been our own doing and yet, at the same time, it prompts a lot of soul-searching. Why? Because we want to understand what role we played in it, if any, so that we can learn from it. This is the process of understanding ourselves more (even if we may not see it quite like that at the time) and understanding ourselves more involves more understanding! Looked at from another perspective we could say that everything that goes wrong or doesn't turn out as we wished (this is where the ego resides) is an opportunity to increase understanding - of ourselves and others. Which is what this journey is about. So nothing really goes wrong, it's the journey we're on.
