Curious again

In order to think that something is 'us' we are also thinking that something is 'not us'. It is not just who we think we are that limits us, it is also who we think we are not that limits us. It is exclusive. It excludes certain aspects of the self and it excludes possibility. It also doesn't take account of the fact that we change. It is as though we get this idea of self and, with that, we close the door on further investigation. We subconsciously say to ourselves 'I'm this sort of person, I do this and I don't do that. I wish I could be that, or that I could do this, that or the other but I can't or 'that's not me'. We think some things are for other people and to some extent we're happy with that because it takes away the responsibility we have for ourselves. And so we retreat into, and take refuge in, our idea of what is us and we take comfort there. But then there are times when we rail against that because we want change in our lives. Unfortunately if we want change then we have to change because as the saying goes 'If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got'.
What self-development is all about, for me, is really a waking up. It's a re-looking at oneself, and the world around us therefore, and becoming curious again. It's an opening up to possibility. Perhaps we are more than who we think we are?
